GIS Implementation Strategy
Esri South Africa Professional Services provides a consulting support package to
bridge the gap between technology and the needs of business. Esri South Africa will
visit your organization to evaluate operations, software, data and systems in order
to recommend: system design strategies, hardware and software requirements, data
migration strategies, application and software integration and overall vision for
the enterprise architecture. Upon completion the organization will be presented
with the finding summarising existing data, applications, hardware/software architecture
and a recommended upgrade path for hardware and software as well as a strategic
GIS implementation plan.
Start up Application Development
Through the Professional Services group, Esri South Africa allows clients to work
with specialised Developers and Consulting staff to design and start building their
applications. We specialize in assisting in-house expertise to function at the level
required for daily successful operational running of GIS in companies.
Enterprise Consulting Services
Many organizations are realizing the benefits of designing their GIS to be "enterprise
wide" to manage all activities with a common spatial database. With Esri South Africa
expertise, we can help you centralize and reduce redundant databases, by evaluating
your operations, software, data and systems.
ArcGIS Server Installation and Customisation
With the release of ArcGIS server, we realised the uncertainty that was created
within our current user base. Our Professional Services team is available to install
your new software and to consult on the process to integrate the software within
the enterprise.
Free and Open Source Software
Cape Town, South Africa was the venue for the 2008 Free and Open Source Software
for Geospatial (FOSS4G) annual conference. FOSS4G is an annual event presented by
the Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo). The conference facilitates the getting
together of developers to review technology and share knowledge as well as bringing
managers and decision makers from around the world to discuss new directions, implementations,
and growing business opportunities in the field of open source geospatial software.

Africa Education
The Western Cape Education
Department ordered GIS software for 286 Government Schools during 2008. Esri South
Africa trained two Educators from each school as well as some Subject Advisors.
Lessons are aligned with the FET curriculum, contributing to the preparation of
learners for their examinations. An exhibition of the products and lessons Esri
South Africa has available to teach Geography using GIS in the classroom was hosted.
A great deal of excitement was generated among Educators and Learners. Esri South

a GIS week organised by GISSA. They performed two tasks organised by Department
of Land Affairs and Esri South Africa. Great excitement and fun was experienced
by all who attended. Esri South Africa attends Tukkies Open Day Esri South Africa

training
Educator training of the highest standard
is available and at least 1300 Geography educators in South Africa have undergone
this training to date. All courses are given by Esri accredited trainers and are
accompanied by a complete manual with a CD containing all the data used during the
course. Courses are presented during school holidays or on a specially arranged
date in cases where a group of eight or more educators can attend.
Esri South Africa offers GIS training courses aligned with the
NSC Geography syllabus to provide teachers with the necessary resources
and skills to teach GIS at Grade 10, Grade 11 and Grade 12 level.

Training is packaged with the product and normally pre-arranged, but additional
training is also available if teachers would like to repeat a course or if teachers
are interested in more advanced training.
- Initial or Basic Training
Comprehensive training for one or two teachers is included in the original
software acquisition from Esri South Africa. This training is given by a fully qualified
Geography educationalist to ensure that the GIS applications are fully understood
and that educators are able to teach the Geography curriculum using GIS as a tool.
Training in GIS principles (using ArcView 3.3 and ArcExplorer), takes place on computers.
Groups are kept small, and additional facilitators are used when needed to ensure
maximum learning.
Where teachers would like intervention or support from Esri South Africa, training
for learners can be arranged.
Paper GIS training takes place without computers in suitable venues. Groups are
assigned GIS tasks and work together towards the understanding of GIS principles.
- Additional / Advanced training
Supplementary and advanced training is available on request. Advanced
skills, which aid in educators designing their own projects or bringing in their
own data, are available on request.

Africa GIS lessons for Educators
ArcLessons were developed under
the supervision of Geography educators currently in the teaching profession and
is aimed at providing educators with Outcomes Based lessons specifically designed
to teach GIS concepts or to use GIS to teach Geography. Several ArcLessons are available
and as more lessons are prepared they will be posted on this website.
As educators and learners gain confidence more complex lessons can be introduced,
and at a later stage
learners/educators can develop their own projects in line with NSC objectives.
