Motla Consulting Engineers electrical network costing

Successful tracking and monitoring of electrical assets

Municipalities in South Africa are mandated to deliver basic services, including electricity.  Motla Consulting Engineers was appointed by Langeberg Municipality to calculate the cost of electrical infrastructure of five towns namely Robertson, McGregor, Ashton, Montagu and Bonnievale. Electrical Infrastructure relates to infrastructure distributing electrical energy, whether above or below ground which includes powerlines, poles, switches, etc.

The Challenge: Calculating the cost of electricity infrastructure of a large geographical area.

The Solution: ArcGIS Online Web Application configured for six towns displaying costing of electrical infrastructure.

Electricity is a significant source of revenue for municipalities, and thus calculating the cost of electrical infrastructure will assist the municipality to support the future growth and the needs of their electricity distribution network. A geographic representation of the Langeberg Municipality using a map viewer, assists the municipality to effectively manage the distribution of their electrical assets to meet the supply and demand of their citizens.

The Results

Esri South Africa’s role was to assist in cleansing and consolidating all formats of electrical related data into one centralised platform. Various web apps were configured using ArcGIS online to assist the field crew in tracking and monitoring of electrical assets.
